Why not call Grimm and say "Listen dude, you understand the predicament we're in here, we HAVE to come out with who our source was or else no one's taking our bowling coverage seriously anymore, let alone our Steelers coverage?"

If it was Grimm and Grimm was telling the truth, they're sitting on a hell of a story.

love your answer here ACE, as if reporters just put stuff in the paper by themselves. you either have the story or you don't. you don't just slap type on the page.

apparently this guy is not the beat guy, but has anyone in this discussion asked, "where the double sourcing?" there's no bigger sports story in this town, and the paper reads likes Andy Garcia in 'Ocean's 11,' ... "You know a guy...?"

Seems that, of all people, the Post-Gazette is vindicating Prisuta:

    "Grimm may have misread situation"

It's hardly vindication because the explanation is that Grimm was never told he got the job, which runs contrary to what the Tribune ran with, saying Grimm was the one. Close, sure, but nothing final. Big difference.

    And knows nothing.
That's the way it should be, right?

If I'm the beat writer from the Tribune and I got bad info from Grimm or Grimm's agent, I'd be throwing both under the bus right now.

I hate source stories, but if I'm hearing it from the coach in question or his agent, I'm feeling pretty good about it.

If this is what happened, I feel terrible for the writer in question.

  9. Thanks for posting that link, Tagline. Because I'm waiting on calls and didn't have anything better to do, I just called up what the Trib had in about this today.

Here is the link to the full story -- http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/steelers/s_490020.html -- but the first three grafs just blew me away. Here you go:

    By Scott Brown
    TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Wednesday, January 24, 2007

Steelers president Art Rooney II said Tuesday the team never offered Russ Grimm the head coaching job, despite another report saying an offer had been extended.

CBS Sportsline senior writer Clark Judge reported Tuesday that Grimm was offered the job, citing three sources close to the team. Judge said Grimm was told he could inform those close to him he would be the Steelers' next head coach and a contract was in place.

The Tribune-Review reported Sunday that Grimm was offered and accepted the job.

Translation: Clark Judge fucked up bigger, because he had three sources, and oh, yeah, we messed up, too. That's chickenshit.

Grimm was quoted further down in the story, but only in a conference call with Phoenix reporters. The Trib could have cleared this all up by getting Grimm on the phone and having him say something like, "I misread the situation," the day after. My guess is that he was pissed at the Trib for blowing the story out of proportion, was embarrassed at the fallout and doesn't want to talk to them. Now this is looking like even more of a debacle to me.

I'm sure that if Grimm ended up being the coach, the Trib definitely would have mentioned how Judge broke it two days before they did.

    That's really low.

Even for them, it's low. My opinion of the Trib just continues to sink more and more each day.
