Plasma vs. LCD

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by bigpern23, Aug 19, 2006.

  1. I'd go with LCD just because the screens are less reflective. I don't see many other reasons to pick between the two. I like em both.

    I own two LCD HDTVs: a 40" Samsung 1080 and a 42" LG 720.

The Samsung's colors are significantly better. The LG has better a better standard-def picture. I think anyone could get by with a 720; I don't see a need for 1080 televisions right now. So little of the programming is in 1080, and 720 sets can make that 1080 stuff look really nice anyway.

I'd stick with LG, Vizio or Westinghouse (in that order) if you're looking for a budget HDTV.

I bought a 42-inch Samsung LCD online at circuitcity.com last Black Friday for $799. Delivery and set up with DirecTV and my surround sound was maybe another $150.

Seriously. If you are thinking of buying one of these, do it online on Black Friday. But the monster blow-outs are only on Black Friday. By Sunday, the same TV was back to $1299.

Thank me later, because you will save assloads of $.

And I love the TV. It's been great.

After reading that link Mustard posted, it looks like Plasma is where it's at. But they also seem to be more expensive.

This link (and I think it might be on this thread) is from April 2007 and it gives the edge to plasma: http://www.cnet.com.au/tvs/0,239035250,240036500,00.htm

This just in from the brother-in-law (a TOTAL tech/audio/video NERD!): He says don't buy anything that's less than 1080p. That goes for LCD and Plasma. He says anything after that is personal preference. He says LCD is almost as good as plasma and cheaper.

That's the next TV; the current one will go into the bedroom...

Anyone seriously considering plunking down the $$$$ should spend some time at that site (avsforum). They've got threads on pretty much anything you need to know and also have separate threads on specific TVs and some that compare specific TVs.
