Bought a 1080p, 42-incher this morning for delivery and setup tomorrow.

The son-in-law and I will so be rocking The Dark Knight on Christmas Eve.

I've been told that under 42" go LCD and over 42" go plasma. Also, Sharp is #1. Anyone get to differ?

Thanks for that. I'm getting a 32-inch. The bigger one comes when we finally buy a house in the spring.

Still, I don't understand this contrast ratio bullshit.

Pete, I didn't spring for the 1080 version of my 50-incher because the price difference was like $600. My picture is phenomenal, and I can't imagine I'm missing much. I think only a serious videophile would notice the difference unless maybe you were looking at them side-by-side at the store. I'd rather have the $600.

Yeah, I notice a HUGE savings if you go for the 720p I think it is.

Avoid plasma. Still too many problems with the units running hot and screen burn-in.

My parents have a 60-inch LCD. Probably better than plasma, and much more affordable.

Contrast ratio is one of the biggies -- like 1080 i/p or 120hz... get all the contrast ratio you can afford...

60-inch Sony WEGA. Have had it for two years now, got it from Sears, and it's still got the best picture I've ever seen.

Whatever you get, have the pros come in and install it. Don't try to save money there. You're going to be looking at that picture every day.

The one I have my eye on is 25,000:1 — I think that's somewhere in my price range and middle of the pack.

I have a 720 and a 1080 and the difference is huge in HiDef.

  11. The contrast ratio does not actually matter. The reason being is that you won't be comparing apples to apples unless you are looking at two Sony TVs for example. The scale that companies use on the contrast ratio is not the same across the board. So that 25000:1 might be the exact same as another company's 10000:1.
