Just had our third straight day of 100-plus temps in Central Washington, and tonight was the worst of it because wildfire smoke is starting to drift in.

Not as horrible as two years ago, but with AQ readings in the 116-140 range, the smell and haze are noticeable. At least they were for me as I snuck the dog out for a walk at dusk (in 93 degree temps).

It's actually a very pleasant 60 outside right now with the high for today expected to be 82.
By this time next week it's supposed to be back in the 90s. That will suck.

Gwen and I have been talking about this all week, because our neighborhood only has one entrance and exit.

You get one split-second to make a decision and we're hearing from the people who made the correct one. We'll only know about the ones who didn't when their remains are discovered.

If there's a fire here, based on Paradise, Gatlinburg and Lahaina, I'm pretty sure we're leaving the cabin, the cars and the stuff and taking off on foot. The Chattahoochee River is less than a half-mile away and no more than waist deep. If we grab wallets, cellphones and our pet, we can submerge or wade across until we're sure which way is safe. Getting stuck in traffic seems a sure way to die.

First reports from Lahaina said people were running into the ocean to escape the fire.

I have a friend who grew up in a beach-front house in Malibu. Her mom had regular fire drills for the family. Quickly grab anything you think is essential and put it on your bed. Bunch the corners of the bedspread, grab it and run for the beach.

Maui's Emergency Management chief has resigned, citing "health reasons."

"Leaning above" for North Texas mid-November is highs in the glorious upper 60s. I think you're looking to hit a different mark.

Forecast high this Friday is 106. Heat index much higher. It’s the first Friday of high school football.

Same here. We always kick off the season with a doubleheader with two of the county schools. One game is at 5:30, and the second at 8. Because of the heat, they're starting both games at 7 and moving them to each team's home stadium.
School B was supposed to host both games and play at 8 has a definite little brother syndrome when it comes to School A. They're already complaining about it, saying the school district is showing favoritism, depriving them of concession money, how this would never happen if it was School A's home game, etc. And after years of saying how much they wanted to get turf, now they're like, "It's so hot on the turf! Whose idea was it to do that anyway?"
It doesn't take the heat to melt people's brains, apparently.

It’s 8:20 pm. The sun is down. The heat index is 106. At 7, it was 124.

Today sucked. And I’m one of those people who like it in the 90s.
