Bracing for at least three, maybe four, days of brutal Arctic cold here. Single-digit highs, subzero lows and double-digit below zero wind chill. Up to 6 feet -- yes, feet -- of snow in some places in the mountains, mostly near Steamboat and Winter Park. The El Nino storm track is finally kicking in.

Next time I look at weather models and they forecast Armageddon and then back off from it — I'll believe them the first time. From 6 p.m. Saturday to about noon Wednesday, it won't get above freezing. Right now just a dusting of snow on Monday — mainly a cold event with single digit lows.

In the meantime — I had a tornado watch box pop up just east of me. Did not have that on my bingo card. Got up to 70º today and they were forecasting lower 60s. Still pretty juicy out there till the front passes.

Update: The squall line popped just east of me just in the last 10 minutes, as the NWS predicted. Hearing thunder and seeing a good lightning show as I step out but not a drop of rain. Godspeed for those of you in the south.

Not going to get above 5 below while heading to a low tonight of 25 below where my family member lives in a nursing home in Montana today. Yikes.

Here in the sunny South, we're supposed to drop to 11 degrees Tuesday night, with three nights predicted for the low teens next week. There will be some busted pipes and engine blocks.

Very windy outside. There will be strong thunderstorms and the odd tornado.

Meanwhile, here in Currier and Ivesland Massachusetts, it's going to be in the mid-50s tomorrow. Alas, this will come with 1-3 inches of rain on already flooded rivers and streams. Then it'll snow on Tuesday. No extreme cold (for here) maybe highs around 30 and lows in the teens. Winter here isn't usually dangerous, just one endless pain in the ass.

Comment on the Facebook page for an amateur weather guy back where my parents live (the page owner isn’t a meteorologist but sticks to credible information):

“I am sorry, but meteorologists rely too heavily on computers; with all their college education and real-world experience, I hope they make their own predictions. You can't be any more wrong than the computers are.”

Yeah, them scientist with all their fancy book learnin' and technology and "data" don't know nothin'
It's probably been noted that I track hurricanes religiously. The rest of the year, I just look out the window to see what the weather is.
It does drive me nuts though when some goober says "Awwwww, it gonna snow/rain/etc." "Well, they're calling for it. Why do you say differently?" "I just don't think it will. Them weathermen never get it right."
A friend of a friend is an amateur meteorologist. It's his hobby, and he's good at it. The difference is he actually took meteorology classes in college, and he models stuff out on his computer using data.

Rely too heavily on computers? What are they supposed to do? Stick their finger out the window?
