Covered Long Beach Wilson at Quartz Hill in a CIF-SS D-I playoff football game in 1990. Q-Hill won with a punt return or two.
The name "Quartz Hill" brings to mind an image of a mound of Timex watches. And that ends my contribution.
I fully concur with your sentiment, MM. And that, too, is the end of my contribution. Wait! One more: One of the best football games I ever covered was Clovis High (NM) at Goddard at the Wool Bowl in Roswell. Eric Roanhaus' boys eked out a 14-7 win over Jernigan's boys. I captured a moment of moments afterward when Roanhaus and Jernigan shook hands at midfield. The chat with Jernigan after that was chock full of emotion. He wanted that win as bad as any game he's coached. Man alive, that football season is my favorite in 17-plus years in the biz.
Born in KC, college at Mizzou, had a stint in S. Carolina, and now in Illinois. I went to visit family in NW Arkansas recently, and it reminded me how much I miss hills/rolling terrain. A fucking telephone pole passes for scenery around here.
Come on. That's A material. Lucas paid Tom Stoppard seven figures so he could insert that line instead of what Stoppard wrote. It must be good!
