Dick--As long as there are traditional publishers, there will be book deals. They have to keep buying, and keep believing that the next deal will be the next big thing (or at least sell enough to pay some salaries and overhead). There is still substantial money out there, IF the book has an identifiable proven audience, and/or the author has a definitive following. Publishers don't want to create your market; they want to buy one that exists.

About the Posnanski book: I'm convinced the publisher made the best possible business move by getting the book out asap, while there was still some interest in the topic. Even if the original book had been scrapped and rewritten with greater balance and objectivity, as many suggested, it's hard to imagine any Paterno book reaching the initial sales expectations at a later date, regardless of its content.
