    THAT is how it's done.

you did the work Posnanski should have.

    Man, what a post.

    News--

Very nice analysis. But why couldn't Guillen have picked a Royals position player and replaced Konerko with Liriano? As much as Torre gets ripped on for picking Yanks during his run, it is telling that Guillen used all three remaining spots on Sawx guys.

  4. If Konerko's not on the team, then you have three guys manning first base who have played about 18 innings there combined this season.

So? They can each play three innings, which shouldn't be too tasking on them.

  6. But...THIS TIME IT COUNTS!!!

I get what you're saying, but this isn't even near Torre's level. Ozzie's taking the best everyday first baseman who's hitting over .300 and is in the top 10 in homers and RBI. If he were to be Torre, he'd've taken Neal Cotts.

The bigger question is, why isn't Liriano going over Buerhle?

Liriano has the same number of wins, a lower ERA and WHIP, more strikeouts, fewer walks. Buerhle has 35 more innings pitched... but that shouldn't override that Liriano has kicked his ass.

Liriano, Bonderman, Haren, Robertson and Mussina all would have been better selections than Buerhle.

Newscolumn: After last year's All-Star game, Francona basically admitted he let MLB handle all his picks, or at least, was STRONGLY guided by the office's advice. Probably the most sensible way for the manager to handle the matter, all things considered.

Buerhle over Liriano is the only truly objectionable Guillen move.

  10. Buehrle was selected before his disastrous start against the Cubs, when his ERA was 3.22, not 3.85. Obviously a 10-ER start, along with another gem by Liriano, makes it look terrible.

    How'd I miss that?

Brain fart on my part.  Duncan must have been in my subconscious from his recent criticism of Guillen in the Mariotti flap.

    All corrected now.

Don't know who the fuck Joe Cowley is, but he might wanna read through the archives on the KC Star Web site before writing such an asinine piece of trash.

Poz's point: Redman didn't have a choice in going to the All-Star game. (It was an added bonus that he shut down the Jays in his last start before the break.) And since Guillen picks the team... well... that's sort of where the buck stops. Don't ya think?

Cowley is a beat writer for the defending World Series champs, a team with the second best record in baseball... and this is all he can come up with? Seriously? Dude needs to pull the greasy Polish sausage out of his ass, put it in his mouth and chew on the fucker for a while -- long enough where he can find something compelling to write about. And if that qualifies as a newsworthy piece, then the Sun-Times oughta rethink some things.
