Yawn, the Democrats would drool over themselves with delight if Coburn was the veep.

He's more whack than Santorum. And that's sayin' something.

He didn't have the stamina in the mid-90s. He sure as hell doesn't have it, now.

    Burned too many bridges, too.

    VICE president?
    No. Fucking. Chance.

Colin Powell is 70 years old. He wouldn't be such a hot choice running as a 78-year-old in 2016.

What the hell is it with all these fossils??

Wait a minute, my president declared victory over a year ago no?

Here's a question: Given how insanely early this presidential campaign started, how early would McCain have to declare he's not running for a second term and start pimping whoever his VP choice ends up being, if he were to win and take that path?

Given the near-permanence of the election cycle, I'd imagine he'd be under pressure from about January 2011 on, which could make the effective era of his presidency very short. Think of how long Bush has been looked at as a lame duck.

If McCain were to somehow win, he'd run for re-election. The only reason why he wouldn't would be for health reasons or some kind of LBJ-like bitch-slap in New Hampshire in 2012. But remember, Ronnie Reagan won re-election in 1984 at age 73 and served until 22 days shy of his 78th birthday.

That is why Colin Powell would be the ideal choice for McCain. There would be someone in the wings that most of country would be very comfortable with as President.

McCain has to make this calculation: How much of the moderate base will he lose by selecting a candidate that appeals to the evangelicals? I think McCain has more to gain by picking a middle-of-the-road candidate that could help siphon voters from Obama or Clinton than someone who could help shore up the extreme wing of the Republican Party.
