Possible GOP vice presidents

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by deskslave, Jan 29, 2008.

  1. I'll echo those that thing it'll be a governor, with Mississippi's Haley Barbour the front-runner. That said ...

McCain (and I'm assuming he's the nominee, which is a safer bet than which Dem it'll be) will be watching to see who the Dems nominate. If it's Hillary, does McCain feel the need to pick a woman? If it's Obama - and Obama then chooses a white male like Daschle or Biden as VP - does McCain try to counter with another minority?

Or, who the Dems pick might not matter. Hell, if Obama edges out Hillary, McCain might pick a woman anyway to try and pick up women voters pissed off the Dems didn't nominate a woman. And beyond Rice and Powell (the latter of whom probably secretly supports Obama) the roster of qualified GOP minority VP candidates is weak. I don't think the GOP establishment will let McCain (who they're still leery of) pick Guiliani for his social views. He'll need someone to shore up the base. So in the end, I think it's a governor ... or a former one, like Romney.

  2. Somebody above mentioned Hong Kong Haley Barbour.

Yes, I know this. That's the sad thing, Jeb is a much better politician than his brother.

  5. That hasn't been true for an awfully long time.
    See "Schiavo, Terri" for details.
Jebbie's done his part to screw up the brand, too.

In Jeb's defense, I think the Jebus Bandwagon swept him up.

Not exactly. The diversion is to give the Port of Gulfport an overhaul, and the casino would be a small component of it. The Port of Gulfport is a major industrial shipping area -- a lot of produce from South America (Dole, Chiquita, etc.) goes through that port.

  8. Yeah, but people still need houses more than Mississippi needs a casino and some more resorts. The port expansion is a figleaf. Fuckabuncha him again.

    I third that... lol

Seriously: I would have no problem with a McCain-Huckabee ticket, but if it's McCain I think he needs someone like a Crist or Martinez to help in Florida. McCain would be seriously in play in California if a lot of independents lean GOP because of him.

    - It never ceases to amaze me how people who come across as so intellegent on other topics can say some of the most assinine things imaginable when it comes to politics.

    - Jeb Bush would likely have been the GOP nominee if his last name were Smith or Jones.

    - It won't be Leiberman (the timing of FBs declaration that he wanted it sooo badly with the news of him ruling it out it priceless - you have a blind spot).

    - It won't be Whitman, that might be enough to keep me at home.

    - Huckabee was very dislike by the conservative base. The best analysis of the race & his role that I've seen is that his success took away Romney votes, while Rudy's implosion fed all those votes to McCain, handing him the nomination. Right now McCain & Huck are tag-teaming to defeat Romney - we'll see what Huckabee gets from it, maybe the #2 spot, but I don't think that's a very strong ticket.

    - For a while I was hoping that we might end up with a McCain-Romney ticket with the promise that he doesn't run for re-election & Romney is the presumtive front-runner in 2012. Seems pretty impossible now.

-Romney seems like a good guy who oozes competance & ability. I wonder what he does next, I hope he stays in GOP politics (RNC chair?).

This is true. Floridians love him. I’m not sure why, but they do.

Lieberman was a loser before. Of course he won’t get selected.

Another loser. At least this one had enough integrity to step aside.

Huckabee should be put out to pasture. The man is a dullard and a simpleton. A vote for him should immediately be followed by the t-shirt “I’m with stupid” and an arrow pointing up. I hope he goes into TV Evangelism. That is what he is qualified for.

The old man and the flake. Wonderful pair.

”Oozes competence and ability” would be the comment that references your first point.

  12. Blame Lawton Chiles for the last seven years.

If Jebbie hadn't lost to Lawton Chiles in '94 (I think it was), Jeb would have had the governorship of Florida on his resume and been the Republican nominee in 2000.

I'm not a huge Jeb fan, but he at least was competent and not stupid -- two things you can't say about his cowboy poseur brother. IMO, Jeb would have been an exponentially better POTUS.

Instead, Chiles won ("the old he-coon walks just before the light of day"), aided by a stupid death penalty ad by Jeb, Georgie wins in Texas and...well, y'all know the rest.

    It's all Lawton Chiles' fault.
