When You're In Prison -- The Offspring

 

It was Dec. 9, 2003, and I just made a 40-minute road trip to the mall with a Jeep Cherokee full of people to pick up the new Offspring album. I'd been a fan for eight years at that point -- since I heard "Self-Esteem" at my friend Eric's place -- so I made it a habit of buying their album the day it came out. We spent about a day at the mall, so I hadn't heard anything off the album, even their single "Hit That," so I was pumped. I liked the album; it wasn't their best, but it was different and, best of all, new. So we listened to it on the way home. The album was shorter than I thought -- couldn't be more than 36 or 37 minutes -- so we got through it before we got home. But when that song, "When You're In Prison" played, we all started dying, from my friend in the front seat to my girlfriend and two friends in the back. We must have played it three times to hear every word. It's certainly not their best song, but what a great time.
