Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife -- Drive-By Truckers. DBT was a band that on paper I should like, but I could never quite get into them. This song was enough for me to buy their latest album. Gorgeous, haunting, heartbreakingly sad song that calls to mind Tom Petty backed by a bluegrass band playing a memorial service for a Southern friend -- which makes sense, since this was written for the Harvey family, stabbed and beaten to death on New Year's Day in 2006 in a crime that shook Richmond to its core. I lived there when it happened, and I don't mind telling you I choked up at spots -- and I'm not the choking-up-at-music type.

You've GOT to get a hold of this.

You followed MM's post with that, TP. You suck.

BTW, MM, I never knew the story behind that song, but it's definitely sung with emotion, especially the way Patterson and Shona sing the phrase "shocked and horrified." That really grabs ya.

The father, Bryan (the guy they're singing it to) was the lead singer in a popular local band called House of Freaks. Patterson Hood said their sound reminded him a lot of DBT's -- intelligent neo-Southern rock, for lack of a better term -- plus his daughter had just turned 1 at the time of the murders, and Richmond is like DBT's home away from home.

I also noticed a catch in his voice right at the very start, almost like he has to force himself to get going through what he knows is going to be a painful song. Intentional or no, it's affecting.
