There's a documentary on the Cowsills that is playing occasionally on Showtime. I thought it might be kind of a lighthearted look at an old teeny-bop band. It was interesting, but not at all what I expected. Their dad was like Murry Wilson & Joseph Jackson combined. They didn't exactly enjoy what success they had.

Yup. Watched it a few times and still have it in my DVR.

And now that you brought them up, I'm listening to this (again)

When I was a junior in high school, I took an honors English class taught by the vice principal, a man few students liked (because they knew nothing about him other than surface, meaningless things). I got to know him as a deep thinker and profoundly curious spiritual searcher. He was far more open with us in the class -- where we talked about philosophy and life issues much more than we did about literature -- and I learned a lot from him.

He was open to having us bring in music with lyrics that had meaning for us, and he always wanted us to play the songs, not just read or submit the lyrics. One day I brought him "Vienna" by Billy Joel. Days passed, and he never commented. I asked him about it.

"I don't need to listen to it," he said. "I'm living it."

I had no idea what he meant. Then I found out that over the weekend, a senior -- a brilliant girl who was in one of his classes -- had killed herself. It started to sink in, but I wouldn't understand it that year like I would in later years.

I can never hear that song without traveling back in time to that year.

"Here's to Never Growing Up"--Avril Lavigne

Kind of a catchy little tune.

"I Get Around" -- The Beach Boys

Their first No. 1 single ... even though it was released as the B-side to "Don't Worry, Baby."
