Who was the departed Herald Sunday Editor?

 

Excellent news for Lori, one of the best in the business.

 

JEFF SAMUELS had two great passions - newspapers and sports.

His passion for newspapers went back to his childhood.

As early as age 7, he was trotting down to the corner store in his native Johnstown, Pa., to buy up the Sunday papers.

"He would spend his allowance on newspapers," said his wife, Suzanne.

"His mother didn't like it, but he just always loved newspapers."

Jeff was able to combine both passions in a more than 35-year career in newspapers, mostly in sports, including 20 years at the Daily News.

He left the Daily News in 2005 for the Miami Herald, where he was the Sunday sports editor.

Jeffrey Raymond Samuels died (Dec. 2) of cancer at the age of 56.

 

Any word on this one yet?

 

If there's one this business has, it's a surplus of qualified personnel for EVERY position. That this newspaper needs so much time to find one for this job is a big flashing danger sign. Of course, that's easy to say when you're NOT qualified to be a sports editor.

 

St. Louis and Fort Lauderdale are taking their sweet time, with the ME at one place, possibly both, thinking, hey, what are we REALLY losing in the product.

All they are hearing is how the company needs to cut the bottom line. Any re-hire is being done, seemingly, after great pause.

 

I don't think either paper is dawdling to save money.

The Fort Lauderdale job has been open since the second week of January, more or less. The Sun-Sentinel has interviewed at least two outside candidates and at least two or three internal candidates. That's no too bad.

St. Louis already has offered the job two or three times, so it's obvious they are ready to spend the money. They simply have struck out. But not to save money.

 

St. Louis offering a LOT of money. I know this from one of the folks who passed.

 

What's the parameter of "a LOT of money"?

 

Not bad.... still a lot of aggravation for that dough.
