That was a huge cosmetic mistake. Functionally, it probably hurt little.

When you are trying to pull in a top-notch SE candidate and he sees that he can't send someone to a basic beginning-of-season function -- one where you can knock out a bit of preseason stuff if you hustle -- that's not a good sign.

Like I said, huge mistake. Even if they were to include a clause in the new SE's contract that says "We will always attend media days", the incoming person will always have it in their head that this is a paper that skimped and could easily do it again in other areas.
That said, that might not be the biggest problem here.
Good luck to the good people in St. Louis. They deserve a solid boss and a good person to work with.

It's not. Just symptomatic of how Lee runs its properties.

Bullshit, wicked. Maybe you worked for a lower-end Lee paper so it's clouding your outlook, but there are other Lee papers that get all the money they need to travel and do the job properly.

I've heard differently. Of course, I'm no longer there, and for good reason.

This job is a chance for somebody to be a hero. While the P-D has been tremendous, in most cases, in the way it covers the Cardinals -- and at times the Rams -- it has failed miserably at covering anything beyond the the local pro teams. An ounce of imagination could go a long way here. But if the resources aren't there, I can understand why people are staying away.

Its prep coverage is pretty good on Saturdays during FB and basketball. Come to think of it, I'm reading the Weekender tabloid when that's the case, and that's the time P-D has a bit more space.

They've cast a line to another very good fish who appears to be very interested. Curious to see if it goes anywhere. It would be a very good get.

Still seeking current sports editors? That seems like a reach, as we say in the nfl draft.

They're working on one now, a current and successful SE.

If you're at a Bay Area paper, St. Louis is looking better and better.
