Trump sues someone. In related news, it's Wednesday.

It's very hard to have that discussion right now with progressives given the way folks on Twitter control much of the news media and, to some degree, politicians.

The obvious thing - what's happening in Texas is the byproduct of mismanagement but, also, some combination of willing cowardice/tacit approval of open borders - cannot be said out of right-wing media. Which is sad and stupid. Reminds me of the early 2000s, when media outlets were shy to say "why, yes, the Iraq/Afghanistan wars are designed for people to make money and cosplay imperialist in the middle east, and we shouldn't spend one more second than we have to." I myself was reluctant to think it.

You can't on the one hand say that you don't want open borders* but on the other denounce as "racist" anyone who has concerns about illegal immigration. Well, you can, but only if you have the intellectual honesty of a turnip.

*My policy preference is for open borders.

In that Trump's move delayed badly needed payments just so he could glorify himself, I found it distasteful. The general concept of leaders saying to constituents, "you were in a bad spot and i helped you out" i don't have a problem with. IMO helping citizens with big problems is what government should be about. I take your point that when viewed from a certain angle it looks like buying votes, but i don't see how that's different from giving corporations tax breaks and other things they want in exchange for donations.

The only concerns I ever hear expressed about illegal immigrants are aimed at the Hispanic immigrants .... and frankly: Not just the illegal ones.

Want to crack down on illegal immigrants? Start policing Visa overstays.

Sure ... probably not surprising given that people of Mexican origin represent close to 50% of this country's undocumented population, and when you include three other countries in Mexico's neighborhood (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras) you're at 60%+.

    Fair.

We have a long, long history in this country of blaming "the other" for all our woes, whether it's German immigrants, Irish immigrants, Italian immigrants, Chinese immigrants, or Mexican immigrants.

If it's not racism, it's at best Xenophobia.

They're not real fond of black Haitian immigrants either.
