70 million people voted for “shithole countries!” And “they’re sending their thieves and rapists!” And “they’re trying to bring in immigrants to fundamentally change our country.”

If that’s not racism and not xenophobia, what is it?

    Economic anxiety?

Good thing the Dems didn't lose any House seats over "defund police" then.

Being concerned about illegal immigration is an objectively valid concern. Send racist vigilantes to hunt them is not. Putting them in detention centers, camps and separating families is not. Sexually assaulting children and women is not.
The republicans contingent that is concerned about illegal immigration is not concerned about humane treatment of human beings. If you took a vote of Texans I bet 1/3 of voters would allow illegals to be shot on sight and have their heads impaled on pikes in the Trump wall.

And that’s because the DEFUND POLICE proponents get disproportionate news coverage, just like The christiantrumpets.

I think it's an interesting and good idea, but there's no compelling reason to do it. The workers come illegally now, work for under-the-table wages, and send back remittances. If the workers are simply going to make American wages, what advantage would there be to hiring them? I mean, we've been working with the idea for years that there's just 11 million undocumented immigrants in America. There's probably far more than that, but getting an accurate count would be like a very fat person, who last weighed in at 482 3 years ago, getting on the scale to see it's up to six bills. It's better to hold onto 482. Counting - which a comprehensive program would do - kind of defeats the purpose.

I operate with the notion that what's going on at the southern border is more or less what Biden's team wants to happen, minus the situation with Haitian migrants. That'll blow over, too. The fuzzy numbers, the lack of counting, the haphazard process..that's a feature, not a bug, of our immigration system. It's not designed to function as an immigration system. It's designed to keep the cost of stuff down and profits high.

And, to be clear, before Trump shockingly won because of the issue - and it was a main reason he won - the MO of both parties was, more or less, to do what's being done and battle for the votes once second and third generation immigrants became citizens. The GOP, especially the evangelical wing, was down for it; Bush was all about it.

The thing about the Northern Triangle...I appreciate the idea. I disagree with it. But it's an idea.

"Properly fund public safety" should have been, and still can be, what everyone agrees to.

Some of it certainly is racism. I already said they voted for a true racist.

I am also writing that your response, which is perfectly logical, is the idea that looms over the immigration issue. It makes it hard to deport anyone - to make any choices at all- so long as any choice is deemed morally disreputable.
