I have no doubt that the GOP nominee will do the debates (if he or she wants to), but it points to a larger issue of the GOP withdrawing from the "norms" of our political system and redrawing the playing field. The Dems saying "no" - we will play on the established playing field shouldn't be viewed as "partisan," expecting the Senate to hold hearings on a SCOTUS nominee should not be seen as "partisan." Taking part in an inquiry on an attack of our capital should not be seen as "partisan" - heck how many hearings were held on the attack of an consul in Benghazi?

 

The GQP is finished as a competitive entity; it's a minoritarian party. The only way a minoritarian party can stay in power is to rejigger the rules, change the laws, fix the elections, co-opt law enforcement, and withdraw from constitutional norms.

 

All of which they seem to be doing a helluva job with. They are going to minoritarian their way right back into running Congress and unleash hell from there. And the agro-bros will gloat and the smirking concern trolls will tut tut about the left letting it get to this.

 

Fatfuck won't debate. He'll go on camera with Tucker or Ingraham or some other master of fellatio and whine for two hours about how he would have kicked ass for sure

I've always hated the "debate debate" where candidates "negotiate" the rules and number of debates. The League of Women Voters wouldn't put up with such nonsense. They'd say we're holding three debates, we'll put together a list of moderators and you each can can strike one, but that's it. Show up or don't. The debate will go on with or without you.

 

The Alabama Republicans are past masters of refusing to debate. Frontrunners refusing to debate the other challengers, incumbents refusing to debate at all. Kay Ivey refused to debate in either the primary or the general in her last election.

 

I know most Dems in your state have little to no chance, but that’s the sort of red-meat thing that they should jump on with both feet.

“I’m not afraid to debate, but why is GOP Candidate X afraid to debate? If they don’t have the courage to debate,‘then they lack the courage to do the job. Vote for me.”

 

I'd love to see a candidate drop the "p-word" when someone avoids debates. People might actually notice a candidate is ducking debates at that point.
