Because no matter what it said, no matter how overwhelming the evidence that Trump incited this, the Senate is going to acquit. For the most part, America is not paying attention to this. Much like the Senate, America has already decided what they believe to be true about the president's behavior. So, the fact remains that the Democrats entered into evidence, as undeniably true, the fact that Donald Trump reveled in the fact that his mob was inside the capitol and threatening the lives of Congress. That will probably matter more in 20 years or 15 than it matters right now. But it matters.

Outside of a conviction - or whatever it would be called in an impeachment - the Dems main objective has to be make the acquittal votes as uncomfortable as possible. Take advantage of every crack within the GOP and deepen those divisions. I'm guessing that is what the witnesses thing was - make Republicans engage in the process (since they seemed to have tuned out). That said - the GOP don't care how things look, or if they get bad press from the MSM, they've got Fox News providing cover. Chuck Schumer and other Dems very much care how the MSM portays their actions.
