Yup. People as smart as they are were not about to stick their foot in that bear trap. Defending Trump after 1/6? Would you want that on your resume?

Having a rep for not paying your lawyers didn't help. Wealthy criminals get excellent legal representation all the time... but then, they actually pay their lawyers.

You sound like you think that will hurt them. The Qhristian Right Party loved the invasion of the Capitol. They want Pence dead, AOC raped and Pelosi dragged out of the building in chains. They will not run from the insurrection, they will embrace it. And their church leaders will call them saints and martyrs for the cause of racial purity and Donald J Christ

The people who did it will be headed to federal prison for considerable stretches. These people aren't in to martyrdom, they want to get away with their misdeeds. The coming year of trials and sentencing and ashen-faced defendants saying how sorry they are prior to going away will curb a lot of the enthusiasm for treason.

At the end of the day, Mitch could have dragged maybe 4-8 more over the convict. He was never going to get to 17 even if Trump was leading the charge with a tiki torch.

A lot of stuff can change. Think about how powerful McCarthy was with his commie search, until he wasn't. Another OKC, something happening March 4th. No doubt the Q people will triple or quadruple down on the crazy, but these Senators who were really never down with the cause (only pandering for votes/protection from primary) will be damaged goods.

Is there really that much of a difference betwen what Trump is accused of and what Manson did with the Tate murders?

I once read a really good book on the history of American political parties. Because of the popularity of incumbents the attitudes of the congressional leaders lag those of their membership. It takes a while for the incumbents to be replaced.

The median length of service for a congressman is currently six years and 10 years for a senator. That means the official first went to Congress before Trump came along in 2016. So if you assume that a third of the Republicans are institutionalist/old line Republicans they would have been elected well before Trump. They will be replaced by Trumpistas. Another group, which includes McConnell and McCarthy, are institutionalists but are desperately trying to adapt. Eventually they will rotate out and we will be left with Trumpistas.

the same thing is happening with the Democrats. The Democrats have been dominated since the 90's by the Clintons and Biden who worried a lot about being called too liberal. The younger Democrats feel that these older types were unsuccessful electorally and did not achieve enough in policy. They will eventually replace the older moderates and the Democratic party will look something a group of AOC's (though I think they will refrain from calling themselves socialists).
