Some sort of split in the right feels inevitable. There will be the GQC side, with Trump as their lord and savior and MTG their mother Mary, and the classic GOP of low taxes and small government. Now that they've been on the big stage, does anyone see the QAnon crowd going the way of the Whigs and disappearing back into the swamp?

The Ponzi line is pretty good.

    The Bombhole Era
An excerpt from the new edition of “Hate Inc.”

Matt Taibbi Feb 12 here). The excerpt below is from the new chapter in the book, looking back at the Trump years. Thanks to Leighton Woodhouse for his great work on the animated video above. From the new foreword:

    A UTOPIA OF DIVISION

News in the Trump years became a narrative drama, with each day advancing a tale of worsening political emergency, driven by subplots involving familiar casts of characters, in the manner of episodic television. It worked, but news directors and editors hit a stumbling block. If you cover everything like there’s no tomorrow, what happens when there is, in fact, a tomorrow?

The innovation was to use banner headlines to saturate news cycles, often to the exclusion of nearly any other news, before moving to the next controversy so quickly that mistakes, errors, or rhetorical letdowns were memory-holed.

The American Napoleon generated controversies at such a fantastic rate that stations like CNN and MSNBC (and Fox too) were able to keep ratings high by moving from mania to mania, hyping stories on the way up but not always following them down. The moment the narrative premise of any bombshell started to fray, the next story in line was bumped to the front.

News outlets paid off old editorial promises with new headlines: Ponzi journalism.

Their looney-tune base in and of itself isn't enough to win a national election, as 2020 clearly showed. They lost by 7 million votes and 70-odd electoral votes, despite having a tremendous turnout.

They need moderate Republicans and independents to win. Independents are voting blue more than ever, and thousands of former Republicans have already quit the party and ain't coming back. And with the moderate Republicans leaving, it just ensures more far-right Q nutcakes will win primaries and run for office, and they can't win in battleground states.

The Qchristian Right party needs only suppress 2% of the vote in a few states to win the electoral college. I hope the independents switch to blue. They are generally fiscally conservative but socially liberal. They voted Red for their wallets. Will they vote blue for their conscience?

Biden won the independents 54-41. Granted, some of that was due to the hatred of trump, but it's a large margin. Many younger voters, who skew blue, are registering independent instead of with an affiliated party.

What has been overlooked since the election is, there are more than 400 bills to protect and expand voting rights in the works in state governments across the nation. People discovered - like those of us in Oregon have known for two decades - that VBM (or voting in person, but early) is clearly a superior way to vote, and want that format protected.

VBM is the wave of the future that even the reddest Republicans will be unable to staunch. One of Trump's biggest mistakes was to demonize early voting/VBM, which made it all the more important to the Democrats to get out and vote. You risk limiting your potential votes when you encourage them to only vote on one day.

    It’s a good piece.

I just don’t know how the media is going to quit the man.

So at the end of the day it was about Republican Senators thinking they needed Trump's base more than it needed them?

    That's chickenshit.

We should remember that the decisive bloc of American voters never think about politics except at gunpoint or in days between Halloween and the election. They couldn't name their congressperson and likely neither Senator either. They know the name of the President, they know what they see on Facebook, but mostly they know what's in front of their faces. If the pandemic ends on Biden's watch Trump is done, period. He will forever be "that guy who kept me from going to the mall, bar, etc. and kept my kids shut up in the house." Also, by and large people hate violence. If Trump's more demented fans commit more acts of terror, and they will, voters won't like that either, and will applaud if Biden cracks down hard, like hauling the cast of Fox and Friends off the set in cuffs.

They won't because they can't because clicks. They love him more than the deplorables.

Now they're stuck with vegetable lasagna.
