Better yet: Newspapers should start extending their definition of ethics to stop this sort of thing.

 

Perhaps - but a lot of these books are products of the relationships built over four years, and reporters go back to sources for a post-mortem book and pick up some of these tidbits months after they happened. You nail down the office gossip, look for more insight on a particular event - let's be real, you'd get laughed out of the press room if you asked the press secretary what the President's "mood" is when X,Y or Z is going on, whether they used profanity during a discussion, or if they made a crack about some other government official.

 

Of course they do it during the hurricane.

 

The NYT has a long tradition of journalists cozying up to (and covering for) right-wing administrations. For example, Judith Miller spent three months in jail clamming up for Scooter Libby. Fortunately, they've broken a few stories involving TFG recently, but that space has mostly been the purview of the Post.

 

They just missed a real hurricane. Now they get a political one.
