All Democrats in all elections Tuesday must shriek "Fraud, rigged, cheated, stolen!" even if they win. For the next two years.....and beyond.

F*ck the labels, when are Americans going to start being the “Great Americans “ that I was told about in public schools in the 60’s and 70’s? Being compassionate to others? Welcoming the world’s immigrants? Being united? Helping others? SACRIFICING some for others? That is the essence of federalism, the reason they rejected the Articles of Confederation in 1787.

1994 to 2000, murder rate goes down every year by hundreds/thousands or murders. Something made that happen.

That scene went through my mind when I read Regan's post. It has actually gone through my mind a lot lately. Democrats don't have to play by the Republicans' game, but they don't have to be too nice, either. There is a middle ground.

That's a load of bullshit. The Republican platform is whatever keeps them in power. It has been for a while, and they don't give a fuck about most of the country.

It was the U.S. economy. 1991 / 92, the U.S. goes into it's last recession until 2008 (due to Alan Greenspan and his successors did, FWIW). Aside from that unnaturally long period of a "stimulated" economy, you got stable growth year after year during the period you are talking about. In the decades before, you not only saw economic recessions more frequently, the GDP swings from year to year were much more extreme. Which created swings in economic anxiety, which always seemed to correlate wiht "crime." That period of stable economic growth through the 1990s and 2000s correlates with your crime statistics, too (not so amazingly). Not only that, when you saw the murder rate tick up (like a sharp rise in 2000 / 2001), it was at a time that the economy was dropping off (the Fed pulled back on its "stimulus" then, FWIW), even if we didn't go all the way down into recession in 2000. When they started to stimulate again in 2001 or so, going crazy (with what caused the housing crisis) in the mid 2000s, guess what? Yeah, economic growth was high and stable, and surprise surprise, the murder rate dropped precipitously. The correlation is so great between the economy and "crime" that it's almost impossible to attribute it to anything else. When people are struggling financially, the angst in creates creates crime. It really is that simple. It's not a moral thing. Most people don't walk around looking to shoot someone, with only the number of stop and frisks being what keeps them from doing it.

Murder most often takes place among people who know each other. In 2020, there was an unprecedented increase in the amount of time many people who knew each other, aka families, had to spend in close proximity. Seems logical that in our heavily armed society murders would then increase. Also it's common knowledge that the fewer people there are around in a public space, the more dangerous it becomes. In 2020, few people went out in public unless they had to, creating more opportunities for those who were out because they were up to no good. Overall, crime is down in Boston in 2022, but there are specific areas where there have been unhappy increases in shooting crime. The factors leading to that are varied. Some of 'em may be economic, but most not.

Whatever the crime rate, until we prevent school shootings we have failed our kids, no matter the economy.

That’s been replaced with “I got mine, fuck you.”
