I don’t think he’ll announce as an independent, but it might end up that way if he follows through. Right now the party doesn’t appear to want him. Which could change of course.

As noted, him staying in for the general election would be quite a gift to the Dems.

"The party" didn't want him in 2016.

If he runs, and he wins primaries, it doesn't matter what the party wants. He is he party if that happens.

It's an existential problem for the Republican Party. The voters who gave Trump the nomination were voting for him, not for some Republican Party principles of some sort. They are racist, nationalist, jingoistic, xenophobic morons who came out from under a rock because of Trump. And once Trump became the nominee, "the party" accepted those people, and worse, started to court them, because they were voting Republican, and "the party" cared more about winning than drawing a line.

Now the party is stuck with those people, and it is therefore stuck with a Trump problem. I mean, who is the party? The same people who really want him to disappear today are the exact same people who acquiesced to him and went along with the endless BS from him.

For once, the WaPo is not treating Trump with kid gloves in a news story.

Possibly new for the GOP, but xenophobia is as American as Apple Pie.

Who can forget the nighttime brandy shared regularly between Newt Gingrich and Dick Gephardt? It's all Trump's fault.
