This is correct. It's up to the House to determine whether his credentials to assume his seat are valid.

That said, you'd hope there would be a House Ethics Committee investigation into his claims. But with Republicans no longer believing that ethics rules apply to them, I don't hold out great hope.

The Republicans have one question for Santos - will you vote for McCarthy for Speaker?

I'm genuinely surprised there hasn't been a lawsuit yet. I assume it goes back to the idea that people just can't admit they were fooled.

If you're going to sue a guy for creating a fictitious persona to get elected, you'd need to start retroactively with 45.

My friend and I made up a person in high school and spent an inordinate amount of time trying to pass him off as real.

We never tried to get “him” elected to student council, but “he” did earn a merit badge in Boy Scouts at one point. He was also quoted in a newspaper once.

LOL. His name was Buddy Shaw, which coincidentally was the name of someone elected to a statehouse in the South (Louisiana?) shortly after we graduated.

I legitimately thought it was my friend’s crowning achievement when he told me about it.

Ah, the fake names list, starting with Dick Hertz.

I’m convinced Heywoode Workman’s parents hated him from birth to give him that name.
