I mean, who wouldn’t want to work for just a hair above minimum wage at a job where you easily can lose a finger or two and have to wear Depends because the company won’t stop the line for bathroom breaks?

But we need cheap chicken nuggets!!!

Maybe business and government need to work collaboratively, reciprocally rather than adversarially.

 

My cousin and her husband have lived in Guatemala since the late '60s. They have told me that the old dictatorship used to send army patrols through the streets in search of homeless kids, whom they would shoot on sight.

Many of the big dairy farms, where the morning shift starts at 3 a.m. and the pay is $10/hr, run on some sort of undocumented labor. Like safety regulations on trains? Pollution regulations? All those pesky things business wish would just go away.

It's really, really hard to draw a clear demarcation between the things we all agree government should protect us from . . . and what some people would call unnecessary government intrusion.

I'd guess the police would be more than willing to crack some heads this time.
