My wife teaches 6th grade math in an urban district.
Not only are the kids' skill levels below grade, so are their study skills. And their interpersonal skills are way below grade. They're worse acting than typical 12 year olds.

I remember my first girlfriend from right after I graduated from high school. Her parents were younger suburbanites. They'd been married 20-something years and they walked around holding hands all the time. I'd never seen it before.

You never see that in the city. Everyone's faces were worn. It was a struggle to get through the day-to-day and pay the bills. There was no energy left to love and nurture and, most importantly, to love themselves.

That's just the reality of it. And it cascades down to the kids.
