Because people will watch Trump, and nobody watches CNN for other reasons. Let's take a totally politically neutral (here anyway) event, the coronation of Charles III. All the cable nets will cover it, and so will the broadcast networks. I'll bet a six-pack CNN's coverage is last in the ratings.
