Heard a RW talker today criticizing the Democrats for not sponsoring primary debates, saying the public has a right to hear RFK Jr. speak. 1) I've heard RFK Jr. speak and his throat situation makes listening to him talk very tough and 2) The only reason he is running is because Mark Penn figured having a stalking horse in the primaries would probably be a great way to get some Republican funding and earn a decent percentage. 3) The GOP didn't even have PRIMARIES in 2020, sure maybe COVID, but again nobody even had an opportunity to run against Trump. Let alone debate him.

No incumbent President of either party has debated an in-party opponent while seeking re-election. None.

Interesting ... I would have sworn Ford and Reagan debated in '76, but no.

I'm not certain they're all necessarily human. Some of what they claim to be about isn't human or humane, much less decent.

Remember, there hadn't been any presidential debates since 1960. The Ford-Carter debates later that year were the first since then, and each candidate had good reasons for renewing the practice, Ford because he was behind in the polls, Carter because many Americans still didn't really know who the hell he was.

Ditto for Carter and Kennedy 1980 —given how contentious that got in the convention.

As opposed to appropriate sexual contact with a 19-year-old intern.
