Well, the founders wanted the amendment process to be Difficult But Not Impossible. They didn't want it to be easy or the constitution would be constantly flopping back and forth like a fish, plus frequent constitutional amendments would exacerbate regional factionalism (or party factionalism).
But they didn't want it to be impossible, as you noted, they wanted the constitution to be able adapt to the times.
They didn't anticipate mass propaganda and polarization leading to a situation in which 1/3 of thr nation denies the literal truth of facts accepted by the other 2/3.
