SARASOTA, Fla. — Contradicting guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state’s top health department official recommended residents against getting a new COVID-19 vaccine booster.

 

In a call live-streamed on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, DeSantis and Surgeon General Joseph A. Ladapo repeated comments made in a live event last week in Jacksonville, Fla., and argued there isn’t enough evidence that the booster’s benefits outweigh any risks. “I will not stand by and let the FDA and CDC use healthy Floridians as guinea pigs for new booster shots that have not been proven to be safe or effective,” DeSantis said in a statement after the callwith Ladapo and other doctors, which opened with the title “No way FDA.” ...

Ladapo, a Harvard-trained physician and a professor of medicine at the University of Florida, has long expressed skepticism about coronavirus vaccines and has previously been criticized for relying upon flawed data in discouraging them. His previous warnings against the vaccines prompted a public letter from the FDA and CDC saying that his statements about vaccine risks were “incorrect, misleading and could be harmful to the American public.”

Florida leads the country in new covid hospitalizations, with 11.81 per 100,000 in the week ending Sept. 2, a 4.4 percent increase from the previous week.

And, obviously, anyone in the state in an official position disputing this will be fired quietly, just like what occurred in the state early in the pandemic when a scientist refused to rework the numbers the way DeathSentence wanted.

American diplomats have visited the towns next to the Darién Gap in recent months, strolling dusty streets and shaking hands with Mr. Marín, Mr. García and others running the migration business. White House officials say they believe that the Colombian government is following through on its commitment to crack down on illicit migration.

But on the ground, the opposite is happening. The New York Times has spent months here in the Darién Gap and surrounding towns, and the national government has, at best, a marginal presence.

When the national authorities can be seen at all, they are often waving migrants through, or in the case of the national police, fist-bumping the men selling expensive travel packages through the jungle.


The top police official in the region, Col. William Zubieta, said it wasn’t his job to halt the flow. Instead, he argued, the nation’s migration authorities should be exerting control.

“Unfortunately, they do not have it,” he said.

Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro, acknowledged in an interview that the national government had little control over the region, but added that it was not his goal to stop migration through the Darién anyway — despite the agreement his government signed with the United States.

 

If Meatball Ron thinks that the boosters are not safe or effective, why does he think it’s ok to give them to people 65 and up?

 

Not that I agree with him, mind you, but ... Benefits. Risks. Medicine is not a tradeoff-free zone.

 

What risks has he articulated?
