Correlation or causation? You don't learn how to live longer in college. (If anything, it might shave a day or two off of what it might have otherwise been.)

(I also don't know if five years, pre-COVID is staggering.)

 

If McCarthy's gone, what kind of vote would it take to make Trump speaker? Majority? 2/3?

 

1. Lots of evangelicals didn't vote for him. (Like me.)

2. Lots of mainline, Catholic and non-religious folks did

3. Some of them aren't really evangelicals, are they? They're lying about it and being mendacious about why they voted the way they did.

4. Others are human. They sin. They chose poorly for the wrong reasons, namely that, because the United States has been in institution-destruction mode for many decades, they overrated the value of institutional evangelicalism, especially when, just 20-25 years ago, it seemed so robust to them and felt so good. They watched the wrong media, felt threatened by worldly things that, in their religion, won't matter in the long run. And some figure that, so long as they're hated for everything they stand for anyway, they might as well play the villain and team up with someone who trolls the other side. Which, he did.

Of course it was a mistake. Some will admit it now. Lots won't. For one thing, they see no alternative. It's a cultural war now to them, and because they figure the progressives won't budge an inch, they'll entrench themselves instead doing what Jesus calls them to do, which is love the person they consider their enemy.

So it goes. It's pretty sad.
