My Dad sold different types of insurance for many years for four different companies. He told me "insurance is sold, not purchased. You prey on people's fears. They don't know what the hell they are buying." He hated selling life insurance to middle income people and quit after a few months because it was exploitative.

Medicare Advantage is the same thing. Generally a rip-off. It was a reform passed as a way to privatize the Medicare system to make it more efficient and save money. That idea has never worked. The private insurance companies have never been able to drive their costs below those of Medicare. One reason is that Medicare does not have the marketing costs the private insurance companies have. Cable news is basically kept afloat by ads of kindly old people plugging Medicare Advantage. But Medicare Advantage is not going to go away. Millions of people have signed up and are convinced that it is all that is saving them from financial ruin.

And I would not ask your PCP what he prefers. The insurance company may reimburse at a higher rate than Medicare. But the PCP will make out just fine on Medicare.

Your PCP prefers that you come in and be seen in the office. Mostly he does not care which insurance you are covered by. Sure, some pay more than others but the more people he sees the more dollars he can bill. He's probably going to spend five minutes in the room with you either way.

Terrific Fresh Air interview with Adam Kinzinger. There are very few interviewers working today who are as good as Terry Gross.

Can't get the NPR link to stick, just google it.
