Nobody who may vote for Haley gives one flaming fuck about a "Civil War gaffe" in which she implies slavery might have been a good thing, because that's what they believe.

 

This Haley thing is yet more evidence that the United Daughters of the Confederacy actually won the war.

For Ms. Haley?

I have plenty of sympathy and empathy for anyone speaking in public who wrongfoots it.

That said, a presidential campaign is a marathon job interview for the most important job we have.

And that question wasn't a softball; it was a batting practice fastball, and she's had lots and lots of cuts at it already, going back to 2010. At this late stage, she has to be able to drive that answer into the seats. In fact it's sort of incredible she couldn't or didn't.

Whether she was trying not give offense; or chose to overcomplicate a nuanced response; or she being cynical about her base, she might need a couple more seasons in AAA.
