Regarding the incumbent running in SC,


True, but considering the tumult Biden caused by yanking the "first primary" from NH and giving it to South Carolina - it is embarrassing.

And the Kennedy in question was Ted Kennedy who could have retired once he was diagnosed with cancer, have Deval Patrick appoint an interim until the next election. Instead, we got Scott Brown who helped waterdown Obamacare.

 

I worry about Biden driving enthusiasm too, but citing the drop off in primary voting is utterly meaningless. It’s like panicking about the lost yardage that comes from taking a knee on the last play of the half.

 

Once again, because no one seems willing to accept it. Biden is gonna be the nominee. Harris will be the VP nominee. The reason no real Democrat has run against Biden is because they all knew they'd lose badly and be persona non grata afterwards. As for "messaging," the cold facts are that every economic and social metric, the US is way better off than it was in the last year of Trump's presidency. If people refuse to acknowledge facts in favor of "vibes" then fuck 'em. They'll get the tyranny they deserve to live under. But there's not much Biden can do about voters who simply don't believe his record.

 

Sure, but I hate the apparent campaign strategy of "everything will work out, it will be fine." That is not a winning strategy. You need organizational strength to drive turnout, why not use a place like SC for a dry-run on how you are going to do it. I fully get that they have outraised the GOP at this point, and will probably have great TV spots - but this election will come down to turnout (people aren't going to suddenly change their opinions on either Biden or Trump at this point, they are too baked in after decades as public figures). Turnout is reliant on enthusiasm, engagement. Not seeing it from Dems at any level. If anything, they are closing ranks to keep anyone not 100 percent on board with Biden out.

 

Gotta disagree here. The thing Republicans do well and Democrats do poorly is repeat, repeat, repeat the theme they need to repeat to resonate with voters. Dems think their voters are smart enough to hear something once and have it register. Republicans know their voters are not.

Biden needs to run not only on “I’m not Trump” but also on his record. Both are winning strategies, and both need to be repeated ad nauseum.

 

1) You can 'dry run' all you want, but Biden is effectively running unopposed. You end up sounding like me trying to get a group of middle schoolers to do an optional essay because we should practice, but if they don't do it, they can play games.

2) Why spend the money now? You have the nomination, don't go crazy in a preseason game. Spend the money in September when you need to get people ready to go vote against a possible tyrant.

3) Enthusiasm? Try to find me the South Carolina Democratic Primary vote totals for Obama in 2012.

 

"Roe, Roe, Roe your boat" is the message that might beat all of the above.

 

Scott Brown won because his opponent ran a horrible campaign. (You see that with how Warren cleaned his clock in the next race.) Martha Coakley wondered why she had to do a standout at Fenway on the day of the Winter Classic. It was too cold. What did she expect on Jan. 1?

 

Here's the thing about enthusiasm. Election Day is not the finish line - it is the starting point. A strong win, having coattails to hold on to some Senate seats and win some House seats will set the table for a good second term. Using anti-Trump sentiment to drag your ass over the finish line, like some of those Ironman triathletes, is not going to cut it.

 

You beat Trump, and you will NOT be persona non grata.

And why would a challenger lose badly? Damn, I HATE this nonsense where challengers to the "throne" are viewed as an enemy within their own party . . . as Haley now is within the GOP.

Biden's running the Coca-Cola 600, has 200 laps left and about a quarter tank of gas. Good luck with that.
