it's really impordant to remember that the book was written to highlight very tough decisions that had to be made.

remember when W. Bush called himself The Decider? If only we knew the moronic idiocy we were in store for. Trump makes him look like Proust.

This is one of those things where it may not be appropriate, politically, to speak the truth.

Japan and India are allies and critical components of the global economy. Saying anything critical, especially at the start of AAPI Heritage Month, is a questionable move at best.

However, his comments are based in fact. For all the faults the U.S. has with racism, it does have anti-discrimination protections for citizens and workers in place.

    Japan does not.

Japan has no law prohibiting racial, ethnic, or religious discrimination, or discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. It accepts an extremely small number of refugees each year, mostly from Asia. Japan has no national human rights institutions.

As for India, the report from Human Rights Watch says a lot. India has also become hostile to higher education students from Africa, with several high profile mob attacks against students.

So, again, you can make the argument that this discussion isn't smart politically - or even that the U.S. should get its own house in order in regards to the treatment of immigrants and people of color before criticizing others. But that does not make it a false statement.
