I think the Tories are a special case. The last federal election in the UK was three months before COVID and prosecuted by Boris Johnson as the Tory leader. Since then, Brexit took effect (January), COVID happened, Johnson got it and came rather close to dying, threw some illegal Christmas parties, slow played one of his ministers being a serial grab-asser and then finally resigned when most of his Cabinet resigned about it.

That all happened in 2 1/2 years.

We then had Liz Truss, who experienced the first death of the monarch in 75 years, named the racist Suella Braverman as Home Secretary and attempted to tax cut her way out of a financial crisis. When that had the exact opposite effect and tanked the markets she was out on her ass.

That all happened in 50 days. There was some discussion of lettuce.

Then came Rishi Sunak, who was so likeable he lost to Truss in the previous leadership race. Though I don't think Sunak is all that terrible, he's already had two major gaffes, he's not a terribly inspiring speaker and there isn't a lot about his background (married into a billionaire Indian tech dynasty, doesn't drink, etc.) that he holds in common with the Tory base.

Sunak is mostly just reaping what the Tories have sown repeatedly over the last four years.

When Neal Kinnock blew his chance to be prime minister in 1992 it was mostly because the Tories finally cast Thatcher overboard after she went crazy and replaced him with a sensible and relatively inoffensive John Major. Things only got worse for the Tories after that and Tony Blair handed their ass to them five years later. What the Tories are going to get is an order a magnitude greater than that, and they will have deserved every bit of it.

There isn't a democratic government on earth that could last 14 years without strong public reaction in the other direction. That said, the Tories really pushed the pendulum away from themselves since 2019.

“Some of those are drugs that are engineered to try and help with your cognition. Some of them are just to try and make you more awake—the amphetamine-type drugs like Adderall and things of that nature, and then there’s things like Provigil that increase your alertness,” Jackson said. “So, I think they’re probably trying to find just the right mix of stuff that can wake him up and make him a little bit more alert and with it.”

What is the saying? Every accusation is a confession?

Make 'em both piss in a cup before the debate. Positive test removes you from the ballot.
