The biggest myth in U.S. politics is that Republicans are better on the economy. The pattern is that Democrats always must clean up GQP messes.

    "Close the businesses!!!!"

    "Look at that unemployment rate!!!!"

Heads I win, tails you lose.

COVID sucked. Its carnage was exacerbated by the Trumpist denial response. Some measures were necessary to slow the spread.

So to mitigate the impact on businesses, Congress passed a recovery bill. And you complain about that one, too.

Fine. And those measures caused unemployment. Just accept it as a necessary cost. Don't use it as a "Nyah, nyah" campaign point four years later. Because you wanted MORE closures and MORE unemployment.

People temporarily lose jobs or more people die.

Decisions, decisions. Just not sure what’s right or wrong here. Tough call!

And I imagine the economy would have just kept chugging along as more people died, stayed home sick, stayed out of public spaces....etc. etc.

Knowing what we know now, that is a highly debatable point.

Not only that, my request is that you stop using "unemployment in 2020!" as some kind of campaign talking point as if Clinton --- who ostensibly would have closed MORE businesses and sustained MORE unemployment --- would have been better in that regard.

Look, slam Trump all you want about downplaying the disease, not encouraging masks, bleach injections, whatever. There's REAL stuff to hit him with.

Just don't use the "unemployment was higher at this time four years ago!!!" line as some kind of indictment because that's stupid, and you know it.

Campaigning on raw job numbers that are strongly in your favor is politics 101. It would be incredibly stupid not to.

If you’re looking for nuance on that or any subject, you’ve got the wrong country, wrong electorate and wrong era.

but as a thoughtful reasonable rational libertarian it doesn't feel that way

Trump added basically twice as much to the deficit as Biden, and Biden's dollars went to all sorts of stuff, from Ukraine and student loans to actual infrastructure and Green incentives. Most of Trump's went to tax cuts for the rich that were guaranteed to result in the rest of us getting raises via trickle down. Both of them had to spend a good bit on Covid, that's basically a wash.
