Has a huge crush on her, and thinks he can speak interest in him into existence. He's wrong, of course.

What a pointless endeavor. America had no problem picking a chief executive without debates prior to 1960 (and in 64, 68 and 72).

Hell, candidates often barely campaigned. Just a needlessly high stakes waste of a POTUS' valuable time. Bah humbug!

We have no idea how candidates would campaign and court voters in a different setup. None. Trump may not be a candidate, true. Someone just as bad might be.

the idea that “the good progressives of major cities are a fixed, permanent state of voters” is just that - an idea.

And if we have national voting, and there aren’t states to get on the ballot for, we’d likely have more parties and more candidates. Biden vs. Trump vs. Bernie vs. Haley. I know who wins out of that quartet in a national vote.

It's an irreverent generation in love with free speech who's also been passed over for power and leadership by Boomers who prefer to relinquish to their millennial grandkids.

Free speech is fundamentally irreverent. What's changed are the things people in power tend to be reverent about. And what journalism tends to be reverent about. I'm not sure why, or for what reason, journalism became so adjacent to academia - we used to laugh at academia's thoughts on the enterprise - and corporations, but it did, and in the face of that, Trump seems like a rebel. It's absurd. But it's true.
