Kennedy won election by 100,000 votes. Johnson got 60 percent, a more than 60 seat Democratic Senate and 295 (!) Democratic House members. Sure, some of them were Dixiecrats, but he had a working Congressional majority. That helps a President's political skills quite a bit. Sort of like the difference between throwing to N'Keal Harry and throwing to Mike Evans.

Well, we'll never know if LBJ could have pulled off all that arm-twisting if he hadn't had the memory of the sainted JFK behind him, along with the threat the inner cities were going to completely boil over if there wasn't real movement on civil rights.

    Precisely.
If Hillary wins in 2016, the hatred ramps up immediately on the right. Carnage in the midterms. The pandemic hits these shores anyway, and the damage is far less than we actually experienced, but 200,000 dead or whatever is still enough for Trump to run on grievance.
Nobody ever gets credit in real time for mitigating a disaster. All anybody knows in real time is that it's a disaster.
Clinton's work in COVID gets immediately dismantled because States' Rights. And the recovery is even longer than we now presume it would be.

But Dr. Fauci is getting too much attention and he's daring to point out the differences between administrations. How will we ever survive?

Some were Dixiecrats? The filibuster for the 1964 CR bill lasted 60 days.

U.S. Senate: Landmark Legislation: The Civil Rights Act of 1964

Here's a list of the senators in the 89th Congress. Check out the number of Dixiecrat senators. No voting rights/civil rights bills were not getting passed without some bipartisanship. This bill was also filibustered and only passed when Eastland was limited in how long he could bottle up the bill in the judicial committee.

Again, many people dislike LBJ. Many for good reason; he fucked up the Vietnam war beyond belief. And perhaps he was lucky enough to serve when the times were right for monumental change. But he got shit done and his list of notable accomplishments, in a period when half of the senators in his party were bigoted, unwilling to change 75-year-old Southerners who controlled almost every important committee, is impressive, perhaps unmatched by any other president since FDR.

I'm sorry. I was referring to after the '64 Election.

LBJ had more game than way more than half the political class now in Washington.

He would be reviled and impeached as a revolting, disgusting sexist/racist. (Which, he was.)

The most vulgar American president ever? It sure as #$@!%* isn't Donald Trump | National Post

Eh, maybe. I'm sure the Legacy of Camelot helped, but he learned the art from Sam Rayburn, who was a past master. He also knew where a lot of bodies were buried and some of his arm twisting was BJJ level.

When a man lies he murders some part of the world.
These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives.
All this I cannot bear to witness any longer.

God, these kinds of stories are such bullshit and so out of touch with what people actually care about.

I don't care. I don't care if he wears a Rolex. I don't care if he exercises on a Peloton. (I know a schoolteacher who is thinking of buying a Peltoton. Yeah, they're expensive. If that's how they choose to spend their money, so fucking what?). I don't care if he owns a classic Corvette.

Does Joe Biden try to portray himself as an everyman? He sure does. Do those "luxuries" prove he's not? Maybe to the NYT, but, really, no way. I'm often wondering how people with seemingly middle-class jobs (not a senator's or VP's or president's salary) have lake cabins and speed boats and ice fishing houses that resemble your favorite band's tour bus. Are they in great debt? Did they save wisely for something they wanted? Did they inherit money? I don't know! I don't care!

Donald Trump shits in a gold toilet and played 400 rounds of golf at his own properties on the taxpayer dime. And now reporters are checking the thread count on Biden's sheets and asking how he can afford the Sunday Ticket.
