    If it was a real assassination attempt carried out by anyone who can be tied to liberal causes, it helps Trump.

    If it was a staged event, none of his supporters will buy accusations of a hoax and fence sitters may be compelled to support him, which helps Trump.

    Also, now there is a very real increased risk of other retaliatory attempts on politicians. That's terrifying.
