It is interesting, with the convention starting this week, you'd think they'd announce it. But I also figure Trump will want to be the master showman that he is and stay out of public view until his acceptance speech. But he's got to name a candidate. My guess is, he'll make a "surprise" appearance on Tuesday and bring out the veep (or maybe have the three finalists appear on stage and dismiss the two losers) Miss America style.

Yea and no. First, it was Trump. He gets ex-president/candidate level protection, not what the president does. It's a notch down. It was also a candidate rally, not something like the convention. By their nature these are more open. The guy on the roof could have been a Trump fan getting a better view or taking picture, you can't just shoot anyone who walks out there.

I don't doubt that heads will roll and policies re-examined. We have no way to know if the weapon was exposed before the shot and someone dithered. I doubt that but it's possible. We'll know a bit more later, although as always the Secret Service will be reluctant to say much about protective procedures.
