It's not as much stupidity as a lot of people think. I mean, Trump is stupid, but what he does intentionally or unintentionally in each election is make himself an avatar for "not the liberal."

There are some true believers out there, sure, but a critical mass of the Republican base, conditioned by four decades of talk radio and Fox News, would be willing to vote for a barrel of nuclear waste because they hate liberals and want to punish them. It really isn't that hard.

 

While bitching to high heaven if the COLA for Social Security isn't high enough, or if Medicare and Medicaid won't pay for their medical bills, or if Meals on Wheels or Dial-A-Bus is late, or if the cost of their prescription drugs gets raised ... or any number of things their conservative, Republican legislators fought so hard to prevent.
