Women outnumber men and live longer and are more likely to vote. Harris wins.

Sure, but also they lack the experience of "participating" before. When all you know is Trump, you have nothing to compare him to. It's like those people whose "favorite" movie is the last thing they saw. ZERO perspective. And Trump has tapped into that. He doesn't need to follow "norms" because his people don't know what "norms" are.

    Goodfellas.

    Goodfellas is my favorite movie.

Sorry. I'm losing my mind. Hurry up and count.

Flips to the X-verse to see what's new in politics...

And my eyes are now destroyed by this sight -- especially without turning the volume on.

Good Lord. They know what norms are. They weren't born yesterday. They've had (some) schooling. They've been iamong society.

As Faulkner wrote, you can't legislate someone's thoughts. Those with more than a nanogram of self-awareness, morality and humanity stifle the worst of their thoughts. It was Trump who removed the restrictor plates on outward expressions of pernicious hatred, superiority, victimization, punching-down-ism.

(It's much too late to have mattered, and it might not have mattered anyway, given the depth of the numbskullness of his supporters, but maybe if media platforms had called him out from the beginning, things might not have gone this far. But "objectivity," I guess. To which I reply, quoting Richard Ben Cramer, fairness is one thing but objectivity is another.)

It is crazy. And by no means am I "excusing" a lot of his followers, but he did tap in to the a group of folks who feel that their "tribe" of the ignorant and self-loathing finally found a leader who "sees" them. Whatever happened before doesn't matter. It doesn't even matter what his policies are, they feel they "belong."

Kind of a sidenote with the Russian disinfo campaign - in a lot ways the Trumpers have been co-opted by Russia, the same way they co-opt and turn many intelligence assets. They flatter them, tell the target them and tell them they can change the world. For people feeling "forgotten" or who feel their great ambitions have been thwarted, when someone offers you a chance to at least "feel" important and a get a bit of "revenge" - it's a cocktail irresistible for many. Even better that many of the Trumpers have worked to spread the disinfo and recruit others to the cause.
