After the initial anger of the first 48 hours or so I found myself checking in on this thread next. It's like when my baseball team loses; I rarely read postgame analysis or listen to any podcasts after a defeat. I know they lost; marinating in it only makes me feel worse. It is the same with politics now. Trump will nominate the worst possible people for key positions and push for christofascist policies while aligning with authoritarian nations, as expected.

My pick is Beshear. He'll probably be put office by then as I doubt he would win a senate race in Kentucky. Those positions are viewed as more ideological than governor.

And besides, the last three elections were won by someone out of office....or never had one as it were.

I'm working under the assumption that he'll be dead some time during his term. Note, this is not me wishing it, but there's no way you can watch his mental decline and think he's going to coast to 2028.

If that's the case, Vance taking over is a game changer, because he's not the unicorn Trump is. He's not popular. And as most VPs are marginalized during their terms, I'm not sure how much he can do to change that image on the fly. I'm firmly convinced Trump could have picked anyone as VP and won. Vance is just ... there.

Note: I was typing this as Cosmo posted. I agree with what he said and…

The real issue is going to be when does Trump die. It’s not an if Trump dies, it’s when he dies in office. If he dies early 28, Vance will have the sympathy vote of having to take the reins from dear leader. If Trump kicks off in the next year or two, Vance will stand on his own. There will be enough for Dems to successfully make a case. Now Republicans are very good at circling the wagons and will back the incumbent even if they hate the guy. So thoughts of a Republican civil war come primary season will be a fever dream. Don Jr and Eric won’t have the pull Trump has. Ivanka won’t do it. The best hope for a knockout-drag out fight will be if Trump finishes the term and there’s a real primary. Even then, Trump will anoint.

My bold prediction is without Trump on the ballot, Dems have an easier go of it. Midterms usually benefit the party not in power, but the fact Dems held their own in 22 (keeping the senate and limiting the House to less than a 10-seat margin) says a lot about how the GOP does without Trump on the ticket. And the fact there was quite a bit of ticket splitting and the senate loss was predicted 4 years ago. Trump doesn’t bring people along. And there will be 4 years of I told you so.

Saying Dems are done for now to eternity is as foolish as saying Republicans could never win again after 2012. Dems can win again. There were just a ton of head winds that liberals didn’t want to acknowledge were there. I mean my god there are stories going around that California will turn red soon because historically conservative counties that voted for Biden went for Trump. No. California will be red when Texas turns blue. The focus now needs to be how do Democrats pivot and protect gains while also proving they can listen to minority communities. Hispanics were angry this year. They were mad under Obama but gave the benefit of the doubt to Biden but this year Trump offered them something else and Dems paid for it. Now when millions are deported, let’s see how that swings.

I’ve actually felt a great weight lift. I no longer have to worry about winning these people back, reforming this system, helping lift this small town. We’re on a two-year path to get out of here. Let the final stages of the Midwest’s brain drain play out. There will be no sympathy or guilt. Get out. Like Harris never had a chance to win, these people and these places are lost.

I have a list of 75 books to read that will keep me busy for a couple of years. Have fun storming the castle, Don!

I return to this thread because it is one of the few places I can write freely and voice the frustration of like-minded people in what is almost entirely an anti-Trump outlet.

As a working member of the press I can't type the things I'd like to on social media. Even if I could, facts don't matter as I've learned before the 2020 election. These people simple love to see "us" suffer even if they suffer alongside us.

But to be clear too many Democrats, one of which I have been my entire life, are now giving up and talking about how shitty things will be forever and leaving either red states or the country entirely.

That's exactly what Trump and his leming followers want and counted on. He expected we would be punching bags.

We have no clue as to what happens in the next four years. If there is another pandemic, if Trump dies naturally or is killed.

We need more Democrats to echo Trump's "Fight! Fight! Fight! and not let them see us as shrinking violets.

He said long after he knew he lost into 2021 and later, you can't give up.

Fuck them if they think I'm still not gonna fight for my children, grandchildren, family and friends.
