I've said for years that the federal government, especially the military, should be required to use U.S. made products. It truly does created trickle down economics.
The military person has a job. The person providing food has a job. The farmer who raised the food has a job. The people who make the farm equipment have jobs. And so on down the line.
The same goes from tanks on down to uniforms.
All those people pay taxes right back to the government.
I know; I know. The government creating and funding jobs for people is SOCIALISM!

Unless we're talking about those tanks made in Jim Jordan's district that are sent from the assembly line off to a surplus depot in the Sierras to live out their natural lives - then we're talking about Freedom!

And the military doesn't necessarily get the best products (especially where someone else has a comparative advantage) or procure what it needs at the best prices.

But other than that, it makes great sense to limit purchases to a hand-picked group that isn't necessarily determined by quality or price.

It’s almost like gutting newsroom staffs, firing copy editors and making everyone responsible for their own copy editing was a bad idea.

As far as the military is concerned, because of security most of the hardware used already is made in america

That's a totally separate issue that would need to be addressed.
If someone is dirty dealing the contracts, bust them for it.
If a foreign country can produce what the military needs better than a U.S-based manufacturer, the real question is why.

Because of comparative advantage. We have limited resources to devote to things. There is always going to be an opportunity cost whenever those limited resources are devoted to one thing relative to another. You simply can't produce everything you might need or want and be the best and most efficient and lowest-cost producer for all of those things. Even when you are the big, bad U.S.A. and have an absolute advantage to a large degree.

The U.S. does have a comparative advantage when it comes to production of a lot of military equipment -- weapons systems, for example -- because we have a military fetish. A lot of demand for that stuff has given rise to an industry here, and it's why we export so much of that equipment to others. As a result we have companies that produce those things well and can meet very detailed specifications. ... even if there is still a lot of corruption around pricing, and sometimes quality, because our shitty politicians have the ability to give out contracts for corrupt personal reasons.

But free trade works and makes everyone better off because of comparative advantage. You have specialized in X, we have specialized in Y, we're better off buying X from you, you're better off buying Y from us.

I'm amazed all these Middle Eastern countries can produce weapons that are exactly like the ones we use, or used, in America but they are outdated.

OK, in plain English, what did the Supreme Court just do as far as Trump's finances? Was that a win for Trump?
