Stocks finish worst year since 2008, ending on a bright note

U.S. stocks ended a miserable year on a positive note Monday, but the market still closed out 2018 with its worst showing in a decade.

After setting a series of records through the late summer and early fall, major U.S. indexes fell sharply in October and ended the year in the red.

The benchmark Standard & Poor’s 500 ended the year down 6.2%. The Dow Jones industrial average sank 5.6%. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite slid 3.9%.
