For me, I think the problem isn’t so much the idea of a wall itself but what’s spurring the compulsive need on the part of Trump and his base to have it at any cost. It’s a monument to dog-whistle racism. I don’t doubt that some of these people have genuine concerns of national security. But considering that Trump arrogantly asserted someone else would pay for it and generated support by exaggerating the problem of illegal immigration (they’re pouring in and are coming for your women), I think caving here could be argued as immoral. It would be rewarding the president for a childish tantrum and would embolden many folks to think that their racist paranoia trumps reality.

There was a deal to be made on a border wall. That time has passed for the remainder of his presidency given his behavior.

Let's just say building a wall the length of the southern border was actually feasible.
You'd have to be millimeter perfect on the border. If you got it even a fraction on Mexico's side, Mexico would be well within it's right to knock it down. If you built it back from the actual border, you'd be ceding U.S. territory to a foreign country.

Not to mention the slight detail that we don't own the land along long stretches of the border.

Has there even been some non-partisan analysis that a wall would be more effective that what exists now? Maybe Pelosi can strike a deal that if the President can go five days without uttering a proveable lie - he gets the money.

They kind of went out of fashion when people developed means of scaling them. Nobody's building castles anymore, you doof.

Also, this might be a complicated lesson in spatial physics for you, but walls have two sides. They're not one-way mirrors. Who is being kept in and who is being kept out is a matter of perspective.

From two workers at the Coast Guard station in Leopard County, NC:

"Willard Jenkins, a lead mechanic, voted for and continues to support President Donald Trump, but he urged the president to strike a deal with Democrats and loosen current funding demands for a wall, for the sake of families like his.

He and his wife, Jamie, a data analyst for the Coast Guard, were both furloughed on Dec. 26. The couple said they have a home mortgage, car payments and their daughter's student loans to pay off. They also cancelled a trip to Ohio over Christmas to visit Willard's father."

The shutdown is taking a human toll across America
