President Obama embraced the name and was proud of it. When both sides are using the same name, the media is not going to overrule it. He bet that it would be popular and the Republicans bet that it wouldn't.

Regards to my tweet that you've been dissecting: Canada has hateful people, too. I wish we didn't, but we do. Canada is also influenced in ways big and small by having the U.S. as our neighbour, as it always has been. Hatred of Muslims isn't a phenomenon unique to the U.S., but having state-sanctioned racism going on next door will have its effects on us. We have our own politicians emulating Trump, not least because of his success. I have no idea what influenced this particular shooter, but hate, like terrorism, crosses borders freely, and I don't imagine his ideas were born in a vacuum.

I do know, no surprise, that the police have now said Alexandre Bissonette acted alone, he was a white guy with a bowl cut—among the most dangerous members of our species—and the "Moroccan" is now being termed a witness and I expect will win some lawsuits:

Does he have to put two "bad dudes" on the list for every person he exempts?

 

Low turnout on the other side was the biggest factor, though, and I think that would correct itself if we went to the polls tomorrow.
