To be cold and cynical - especially for a pro-Social Security post - it also meant that Ida Fuller's kids weren't going to have to reach into their own pocket to support her. Or at least not much.

 

In many cultures, the kids are looked on to take care of the elders in old age. Even bring them into their home.

In America, we ship 'em off to A Place for Mom because, well, we got a life to lead, dammit.

 

Family is definitively important. The whole trend in America since the end of World War Two has been to fragment it. Interstates for people to get away. Television and everything else so we don't have to actually interact. And we have lost something there.

Taking that into account, though, I think there's a reason people flooded out to the suburbs from the cities in the late 40s and 50s. Living side by side in a multi-generational home just gets to some folks after a while.

 

The “Hope I Die Before I Get Old” generation doesn’t get to suddenly try to retroactively become the loveable wise grandpa who lives in the extra bedroom after 40 years of shitting on everyone else.

“We fucked everything up, raised a generation of weaklings and gave you Donald Trump. You’re welcome! Now can we crash here?”

Live a life thst makes others want you around. Don’t demand it out of obligation.
